How to: Wear Sequins at Work

Jan 26, 2012

Yes, it is actually possible to get away with wearing sequins to work, even if you're not a circus performer/night club dancer! In fact, when paired with the right pieces, you can even get away with wearing sequins to your standard 9-5 office job.

Exhibit A:

I wore a neutral, chunky sweater, which made the look less costumey. (I've had a bit of a complex about that ever since Eric referred to my skirt as my "show choir" outfit.)  For an even more demure take on the look, skip the leopard heels and go with plain back flats.

Also, check out these earrings. A perk of working in the gallery? I'm always supposed to wear at least one piece of jewelery from the store. I love these earrings- they're surprisingly lightweight and add an extra pop of color to the look. In fact, a customer loved them so much, she asked me to take them off so she could try them on. They're fabulous, right?

Outfit Details: Earrings- borrowed from Laura Preshong Gallery; Sweater- Banana Republic; Belt- Primark; Skirt- Romeo and Juliet Couture; Tights-?; Shoes- Sole Society via The Budget Babe giveaway.

PS- how do we feel about my alfalfa-esque flyaway in the first shot? I think it adds character ;)

Major Update

Jan 24, 2012

image from farm8.staticflickr.com*Photo above shows some of the gifts I received for my 24th birthday, which was this Saturday. Thanks Mom & Steve for the Kindle and thanks to Amy & Stew for the fun bracelets!

Just wanted to keep you all updated on some big changes and share some exciting details about my 2012.

  1. Blog Better Boston, the conference I'm planning with Amy, is now a big part of what I do daily. Hopefully we'll be announcing the date and location later this week and you'll all be able to purchase tickets.
  2. Instead of working a 9-5 "normal" job, I've decided to take some time to just...freelance. I'm working with a few clients right now and am loving it. Freelancing has allowed me to create my own schedule and choose the types of companies I want to work with. I'm in the process of putting together information on my consulting services (!!) that I will be offering to both bloggers and brands. I'm currently available for hire in the fields of copy writing, blogging, social media marketing, community management, event planning and blogger relations.
  3. The largest chunk of my freelance time is currently spent running social media for Laura Preshong, a local ethical jeweler, gallery owner and all around cool lady. Definitely check out her stuff online, and if you're in the Boston area, let me know if you want to come to a really fun event that I'm planning. Whether you're local or not, make sure to "Like" the Laura Preshong Gallery page on Facebook, as I'll  be posting a really fabulous giveaway in the next few weeks!
  4. Though I've neglected it in the past week, my goal is to spend a lot more time on my blog and get back into a normal posting schedule. This blog truly represents me, and is therefore an important part of my brand and who I am.
  5. Maggie has been taking up a ton of my time. She's so sweet and smart, but definitely still needs some training. I love that she gives me a reason to go outside more than once every day, and how proud I am to be raising her with Eric.

So...any good name ideas for my consulting business?

Sunday Confessional: Meet Maggie

Jan 15, 2012

Yesterday, Eric and I welcomed Maggie into our hearts. She's an 8 month old, 50 lb Border Collie/Pyrenees/Australian Shepherd mix.

She's so, so sweet and while she still has a lot to learn, she's very smart. She already knows all of her basic commands and managed to impress everyone in the dog park with her good behavior. Now, if only we could work on her need to destroy her toys.

It was fun to look back through my blog and I had a lot of "oh yea, I remember that outfit, I need to wear it again" moments.

Patterns and Brights

image from farm8.staticflickr.com
image from farm8.staticflickr.com image from farm8.staticflickr.comI admit it, I definitely put more effort into my look when I'm hanging out with other bloggers. Take today for example. Amy and I were out location scouting for Blog Better Boston, and considering the last time we had a meeting I was wearing a bathrobe and pjs (it was via Skype, ok?!?), I needed to step it up.

We had a lot of fun and were extremely productive today. We found an ideal location and are just waiting on confirmation. Cross your fingers that it works out...

Thanks to Amy for taking the above photos!

Outfit Details: Top- c/o Three Dots; Belt- Primark; Skirt- H&M; Tights-?; Boots- c/o Shoeline.

Here's a sneak peek of Amy's outfit:

G3B Recommends: The Body Scrub by Indie Lee

Jan 10, 2012

image from farm8.staticflickr.com
A few weeks ago, a friend from BU reached out and asked if I wanted to check out some all natural skincare and beauty products created by his boss, Indie Lee

The company sent over a care package full of amazing products, but my favorite is definitely The Body Scrub. First of all, it smells like lemon cake- I actually have to keep reminding myself not to lick my fingers. I love how Indie Lee breaks down the Ingredients so you know exactly what you're getting into:

Ingredients: Saccharum Officinarum (sugar cane), Coco Nucifera (coconut) Oil, Simmondsia Chinensis (jojoba) Oil, Melissa Officinalis (lemon balm), Essential Oils of Cymbopogon Citratus (lemongrass) and Vanilla Planifolia (vanilla)

The scrub leaves your body feeling moisturized and smelling delicious. Even after rinsing, you'll leave your shower feeling like you've already applied body oil. It's also great to use on sore feet/legs if you're looking to recreate the massage you receive when getting a professional pedicure- perfect for pampering yourself or your significant other.

Definitely Check out Indie Lee's amazing product line!

Sunday Confessional: I Don't Always Read Labels

Jan 8, 2012

image from farm8.staticflickr.comAbout a month ago, I spent a VERY long time in the beauty products section of TJ Maxx staring at shampoo and conditioner bottles. I knew I needed a clarifying shampoo and wanted to find a conditioner that wouldn't make my hair too oily. After probably 20 minutes of reading labels, smelling shampoo and comparing products, I came home with the 2 bottles on the left.

It was only after about 3 washes that I realized my "conditioner" generated a really nice lather. On further inspection of the bottle post-shower, I realized that I was in fact shampooing my hair twice: first with a clarifying shampoo, then with a creamy shampoo with a conditioner-like consistency.

Yup, I bought myself two jumbo sized bottles of extra concentrated shampoo. Unfortunately, this is not the first time I've made this kind of obvious mistake.

When I lived in Israel, I bought a small bottle of what I thought was super condensed laundry detergent. I used it for various washes and only came to realize that it was actually fabric softener when I learned the Hebrew word for "conditioner" and determined that my "detergent" had a similar word on the label because it made things soft. Oops. The worst part is, I made the exact same mistake when I was back in the states. That time though,  I couldn't use the language excuse. Oops

Please, share your "ditziest" Sunday Confessional so I'll know I'm in good company...

CLOSED Win it: Being Blonde Giveaway!

Jan 6, 2012

image from farm8.staticflickr.comThe weather outside may be quite frightful, but don't let that lower your spirits! It's time to say buh-bye to the winter blues with a stylish upgrade. Banish those blahs with new highlights and a blow out, courtesy of Heather @ Jeffrey Lyle Salon.

I first met Heather a few weeks ago when I won my own highlights + blowout via a giveaway on Radiant Republic. Heather is so sweet and talented and my experience at Jeffrey Lyle was amazing.

The salon is spotless and everyone is extremely nice. Heather and I chatted about everything from The Bar Method (must try), to her previous life in California to Kate Spade sample sales. In addition to being a fabulous stylist, Heather also contributes to the Jeffrey Lyle blog, Being Blonde.

Another thing about the salon that I absolutely love? They're extremely involved in social media. Make sure you're following them on Twitter and Facebook for blog updates and salon news.

Ok, on to the good stuff:

Want to win your own pampering session (highlight+ blowout) with Heather Ward? Simply leave a comment below with your favorite winter hair styling tip to be entered to win.

Giveaway is open to any readers who can make it into the salon's Newbury St location. You have a week to enter and the giveaway will end on Friday, January 13th at noon EST.

Good luck!

Side-heatherAbout Heather: Heather relocated from San Francisco to Boston all for the sake of hair color greatness- to work with Jeffrey Lyle.  Now she's feeling quite at home having become well versed in his methodical technique, free hand Balayage, and writing for their blog.

Photo Diary: Homemade Ravioli

Jan 3, 2012

image from farm8.staticflickr.com image from farm8.staticflickr.com image from farm8.staticflickr.com image from farm8.staticflickr.com image from farm8.staticflickr.com image from farm8.staticflickr.com image from farm8.staticflickr.com image from farm8.staticflickr.com image from farm8.staticflickr.comThe above photos were taken on Christmas eve as we prepared ravioli completely from scratch. It was a family effort- Dotti made the pasta and passed it to Eric. Eric stuffed, folded over and cut the long pasta noodle into ravioli and passed them to Matt. Matt pressed the edges of the ravioli with a fork before handing them off to me. I used a pizza cutter to round the edges of the noodles and voila, they were ready to be cooked.

The final product was super yummy, but my favorite part was definitely the assembly line process. We figured out "best practices" along the way, joked around and had a great time.

These ravioli were definitely made with love.
