Aretha Franklin, you got it goin' on!
Jan 20, 2009
I have to say, as much as I disliked Michelle Obama's ensemble, I was completely blown away by the style of another African American fashionista: Aretha Franklin. I mean, did you see her hat with the gigantic bow?
It kind of reminded me of past birthday and Hanukkah parties. My sisters and I would make hats out of the remains of present wrapping: ribbons, bows, tissue paper, etc. Our hats were always extravagant and exaggerated, over-the-top and amazing...kind of like Aretha's.
I was just trying to describe the diva-licious hat to Jenni, who only managed to catch Obama's speech, which is pretty good considering she's not even American. I scoured the Internet (ok fine, I typed "Aretha Franklin Inauguration" into Google) and got nothing. I was devestated...until I looked on CollegeCandy, which had a link from the LA Times with a photo!
Oh, and considering my birthday is tomorrow, I'm expecting millions of tissue paper wrapped presents, so perhaps Megan and I will perform the old hat making traddition and replicate Ms. Franklin's bow-dacious beauty.

I'm sure that Blair Waldorf would also be proud.
P.S. Happy early birthday!
Reminds me of those hats we used to try on at Burlington Coat Factory and J.C.Penney. The bigger the better seemed to be the rule of thumb.
I'm not sure if people were more focused on Obama's inauguration or Aretha's hat...
